Platelet Rich Plasma (or PRP) is a form of blood that contains a concentrated amount of platelets. Combined with the plasma, PRP harbor a variety of naturally occurring growth factors such as PDGF, VEGF and TGF that play important roles in growth and wound healing. PRP has been used in a variety of clinical settings including sports medicine, neurosurgery and cardiac surgery, where PRP therapy promotes healthy blood clotting and acceleration of the wound healing process. PRP is now finding its way in the field of plastic surgery with its ability to restore a more youthful skin appearance and hair regrowth.
The technique involves harvesting a small amount of a patient's blood, and then spinning the sample in a centrifuge to get the concentrated PRP. The platet rich plasma is then injected in the skin or scalp using a microneedle device to deliver the PRP. The procedure takes about an hour, and most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours. The procedure is typically done monthly for about 3 sessions and then once or twice annually to maintain the benefits.
PRP injections in the face can soften the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin texture and give a more youthful appearance through its ability to stimulate new collagen production within the skin.
PRP also stimulates hair follicles in the scalp to minimize hair loss and stimulate new hair growth.
